Small World (Macro Photography) - DrDane

This pearlescent spiral is on the inside of a sliced shell of a Chambered Nautilus, and was taken with soft, diffused light. The little things sticking out from the chamber walls are called "septal necks," and were the passageway for a structure called the "siphuncle." (Great Scrabble word, huh?) The siphuncle connected the chambers and provided a means of adjusting the water and gasseous content of the chambers as it moved about in the ocean with its own form of jet propulsion.
