Small World (Macro Photography) - DrDane

9199-2005 Miniature Mshrm Garden, Ashland, OR - Dec, 2007. After a few rainy weeks these tiny mushrooms started popping up out of the cracks in the bark of several apparently healthy oak trees. In this area, mushrooms usually show up in early winter or spring after everying has had a good soaking. I had never seen this particular type before, but I must have walked past them many times before on my nature walks. They are only 3mm across! The flattish green structures are lichens - a mutually beneficial partnership between an algae and a fungus.
